yesterday and today

When following Dr. Fuhrman's "Eat to Live" plan, you measure your food intake by weight rather than calories. Here's a brief description of his recommendations. Yesterday, out of curiosity, I weighed all my food. Here's what I ate:

Brekky: blended salad & 2 Tbsp sunflower seeds (I eat the seeds after my workout, and the blended salad when I get home)

Lunch: last of the kale-fennel soup on steamed veggies (broccoli and cauliflower) and baby bok choy. raw carrots for dessert.

Dinner: spinach & apple & veggie salad with edamame. raw carrots & celery.

This turned out to be 2 lbs or raw veggies (!), and about 1/2 lb of cooked; 4 servings of fruit, probably 1 cup of beans, and 1.5 oz of seeds. That's twice as many raw veggies and half as many cooked as recommended. So I guess it is pretty easy to eat the recommended amount of veggies. I woke up hungry today. I wonder if the raw veggies don't digest as well as cooked so less calories are used. So if you want to lose weight, eat more raw veggies. I don't need to lose weight but I really like chewing on the raw veggies.

Today I had the usual brekky (sunflower seeds & blended salad); lunch was raw veggies and black bean hummus. Visitor Kenny confirmed that this is his favorite meal. Dinner was a yummy salad with grapefruit and leftover raw veggies from lunch. And I am a little hungry again at bedtime. So I probably need more cooked veggies. But I didn't have much time today to cook. Tomorrow will be hectic too, but I'll try to cook up my kale.

How much did the bag of salad greens cost, for your blended salad?

I buy organic baby greens in a plastic tub at Wal-Mart. They are $4.98, for a 10oz container. I can only get down about half the container in two green drinks a day. How do you get 15oz in a drink? Also, drinking $4.98 everyday is not in the budget. Any suggestions?

I am curious too, Dr. Fuhrman doesn't mention a distinction between the size of the person, versus amounts of veggies in weight.

I am 5'3 1/2 feet tall. I weight
@110, give or take 2 pounds. I don't worry about the weight either. I just want to be the healthiest possible. I am 48 years old.

I would love to hear your thoughts!

Hi Naina,

I see that my blended salad post can be misconstrued! I typed "1 5 oz bag" meaning "one 5 oz bag" but I can see where it looks like "15 oz bag" instead! sorry about that! I corrected the post to make it more clear. It's just a single 5 oz bag of greens. That's enough for me! so then your greens would cost more like $2.50 a day. Is that in the budget? A lot of people spend more than that at coffee shops. :)

I think the size of a person matters a lot! I think we older light-weight women don't need a lot of calories or volume. I find even though I exercise a lot, I really don't need more than 1.5 to 2 oz of nuts and seeds a day. And I think 1/2-1 cup beans a day is plenty for me. It's taken me a while to figure this out.

Let me know if you have anymore questions. I think I've seen you post on the Fuhrman forums. I haven't had much time to post this week but I think I recall seeing you and going, hey, she's almost the same age as me. I turn 50 in about 6 weeks. This is definitely a time in your life when what you eat makes a big difference on your health!

Thanks! :) That sounds like a plan! Glad you clarified that for me. I would have probably tried to force down more greens. He..hee!

I do eat a handful of walnuts most days. I also eat avocado often, it does have a good bit of fat too. I love them, and they keep my hunger from bugging me to soon.

I'm good to eat my fruit too. I don't have a scale, but your post makes me feel more confident. I always worried I wasn't eating enough.

Oh, I too love munching on carrots!

I am not currently a member of Dr. Furhman's site. I hope to be in the future. I have only been eating this way for about 5-6 weeks. I found "Eat to Live" thankfully, and went for it with both feet!

You might have noticed me on Jana's blog. That is where I found your site. :)

Thanks for your blog!

Hi Naina,

Sounds like you are doing really well! Congratulations! I just checked out your blog. Do I understand correctly that you have lupus? Dr. F. has helped a lot of people with this condition. I'm glad you found this program.

Barbara,

Well, yes I have been labled with Lupus. I truly haven't come to terms with that diagnosis. However, it is in my medical records. Honestly, auto-immune problems are rampant in my family.

I too am very excited about this way of eating/life! :)
